You bet’cha there’s a difference. Web design is totally about the look and feel of the site, while web development is about the back-end of a website. Developers make sure things run properly. They focus on how a site works and things get done. Developers keep a site running. They are excellent programmers. They know stuff like php, HTML, and understand how forms should function. They build your databases and mobile apps.

Web Designers focus on how site visitors view the site. Designers build graphics (logos, web components) and create a great visual experience. Designers ensure a sites use as a marketing tool. They understand how to create share of mind and encourage site visitors to really get lost in its offerings.

There is a difference, however over the years my development skills have strengthened. The truth is, web designers must know basic web development to complete a web project.

I create graphics for websites and rarely use Photoshop. It’s just my choice. My industry friends use it often, however true graphic designers use other platforms, such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. My focus is Flash design, so I leave the heavy-hitter graphics to designers whose main focus is graphic design.

Outstanding graphics make my job easy! The better the graphic, the better the outcome of a web design project. I adore vector graphics. They are easy to size adjust and still look clear and visually appealing. Static images cannot be sized adjusted and can look really bad.

So, is Photoshop great for creating graphics? Well, it depends on the project and the skill level of the graphic designer. If you need a professional logo or components for a web project, I would suggest InDesign and Illustrator with a little Photoshop use.

Greetings Chocolatiers!

My journey lately is centered on brand image. The more I speak with people about marketing the more I am disappointed by how lightly it is taken. It is viewed as an afterthought to think of later and to do later. I wish my parents, family and friends who helped raise me really understood marketing and the power of it. Marketing and promoting a life from the womb is (real, the truth, no nonsense) setting-up a person for success. What if you were marketed, promoted, and schooled since you were a day old? Well why start so late? What if you were marketed, promoted, and schooled since conception!?  I think about it quite often.  Stop and listen to how you market your children and those around you. Bad publicity and damaging marketing does not help anyone, especially the future offspring of your family. Always know that brand image has VALUE!  Brand image is part of many estates. Eartha Kit, Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, to name a few. I know these are icons and iconic people make up a small percentage of the population, but you get the point.

When Eartha Kitt died on Christmas Day of 2008, I visited her official website. I  found this after re-visiting her site recently http://www.earthakitt.com/business/index.html

We may not become world known icons, however we can market ourselves and live forever in our communities!

Marketing vs Sales, there is a difference!

I have been a legal marketer for Mississippi attorneys for more than five years and the first consultation consists of relaying the difference between Marketing and Sales. It is verbally shared with attorneys and also given in our informational consultation sheet. This understanding is important. We only offer marketing services, it is the firm’s or attorney’s job to close the sales. The concept of Marketing and Sales applies to every sort of business. No matter how large or small the business model, marketing and sales perform the exact same way.

Marketing and Sales are like shoes and socks. They work together, however have very different features and functions. They also can operate and be used separately and stand alone, however when used together gives outstanding results.

I know most have heard, ” You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink.” Well, marketing leads a horse to water only, it is sales that makes them drink.

Marketing sets the stage and the sales department cements the relationship or closes the sale, for it is the sales person that has the real one-on-one contact, the PERSONAL contact with the potential client or customer. If Sales fails in establishing a great sales and brand image experience, future efforts of Marketing are in jeopardy. Confidence is lost in the Brand, and Marketing must work harder to lead a horse to water or can do the job of leading the same audience once more to try the same water again.

Marketing and Sales are very different. Understanding the difference will create success to you and your Brand. (A successful brand is Seasume Street. Still love the characters. My favorite’s are Bert & Ernie. The marketing is fantastic and the confidence felt by us about this brand is through the roof. We believe and trust these characters and now will buy anything the brand sells. We trust purchasing from this brand because they have delivered to us just what they marketed.)

Greetings everyone!

My first taste of brand image and marketing, like most was working as sales clerks in retail stores while in school. The retail job that gave the most education about company branding and image was Victoria’s Secret. I loved everything about Vicky except the long hours. BRAND was all I heard in meetings. BRAND was talked about at every meeting, conference call and correspondence sent by the corporate office. It was unreal. Product was important, however BRAND for Victoria’s Secret was the ICING!

What I learned from that experience was that your company PRODUCT offerings and services can change like the wind. Product CHANGE must occur to keep up with the time, however your BRAND IMAGE is timeless! It will sell itself through the many product and service change and offerings over many decades!
